Chapter 08
TRUSSES AND SPACE STRUCTURES

"We introduced trusses in Chapter 1 when describing different methods of designing bridges. Trusses are structures commonly used to efficiently span relatively long distances. As such they are employed in the design of bridges or the support of roofs of large buildings and stadiums. A truss is defined as a large structure made of many smaller uniaxial members (bars, rods and cables) that are connected together to form a strong and stiff arrangement. The term truss is derived from the Middle English word trusse, whic means "bundle". A few of the geometries used in truss design in the early 1800's were previously defined..." p8-1
