Chapter 03
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS

"Having discussed the basic concepts of stress and strain, we will in this chapter show how stress can be related to strain by using experimental methods to determine the stress-strain diagram for a specific material. The behavior described by this diagram will then be discussed for materials that are commonly used in engineering. Also mechanical properties and other tests that are related to the development of the mechanics of materials will be developed."

COMPRESSION

COMPRESSION TEST
AN EXPERIMENTAL TRIAL TO DETERMINE THE PROPERTIES OF A MATERIAL UNDER COMPRESSION.

EXTENSOMETER
AN INSTRUMENT USED TO MEASURE SMALL CLANGES IN LENGTH

GAUGE LENGTH
DISTANCE BETWEEN PUNCH MARKS ON A MATERIALS OR SPECIMEN BEING TESTED FOR TENSION AND COMPRESSION BEHAVIOR.
